Lead Sleeves in Medical, Construction and Industry

There are three different interpretations of the term lead sleeves. In the medical industry and nuclear industry lead sleeves refers to protective clothing worn by the technician or surgeon. In construction lead sleeves refers to expanding bolt sleeves and in cables lead sleeves are used to provide corrosion protection.

Lead Sleeves in the Medical field

Lead Sleeves provides arm protection with complete hand mobility and are usually worn with lead lined gloves. The leads sleeves are built with an outer coating of vinyl and fastened around the arm using Velcro.

Lead sleeves are used as radiation shields in Radiology,  Orthopedic Surgery, and Urology.

Lead Sleeves in Construction

Lead Sleeves are used in expansion bolts that are used to anchor into materials such as concrete and brick where it is very difficult to create reliable screw threads. Lead is a suitable material for this application as it soft. Different configurations of lead sleeves are in use today.

One version uses a tapered nut located within the lead sleeve. A hole is drilled and the lead sleeve and bolt assembly is inserted. A bolt is then inserted, and when tightened, the tapered nut is drawn towards to head of the bolt, causing the lead sleeve to expand.

Another configuration is the bolt–lead sleeve–metal cone–nut. In this type, a metal cone and lead sleeve rest on the bolt assembly. When the bolt is tightened, the pressure forces the metal cone into the lead sleeve, and this expansion secures the bolt in place.

Lead Sleeves in the Power Industry

Modern power cables come in a variety of sizes, materials, and types, each particularly adapted to its uses. Cables consist of three major components: conductors, insulation, and protective jacket. The protective jacket or sleeve is one of the components that in certain applications require the use of lead sleeves.

 In nuclear industry applications the cable will have special requirements for ionizing radiation resistance. Cables intended for underground use or direct burial in earth will have heavy plastic or metal, most often lead sleeves to provide corrosion protection.
