The orders were delivered from Nuclead’s on site inventory of lead products and included the following orders:
- An order of 4″ lead pipe, which will be used by a commercial fishing company in Warwick, RI for line and rig weights.
- An order of 2″ diameter pure lead pipe. This was sold to a general contractor for water displacement of an old home in West Tisbury, Martha’s Vineyard, MA
- An order of lead pipe which was sold to a municipality transit system used for shielding purposes on electric trains that transport commuters daily.
Lead pipe has several other applications in industry today including in the paper industry where lead pipes are used in both the cooling systems and chemical transport systems. These systems use corrosive gases and liquids such as sulfur dioxide which is used in the cooling systems, and hydrogen peroxide and zinc hydrosulphite, which are used to bleach the wood pulp as part of the paper making process. Lead piping is quite corrosion resistive and is well suited to this type of application.
Lead pipe alloyed with various amounts of tin is traditionally used for church organ pipes, the tone is controlled by the amount of tin in the lead pipe.
Other applications for Lead Pipes are for Soil Waste, Ventilating, and telephone and telegraph underground piping. Lead pipe and Lead sleeves are also used for electronic and radiation shielding in certain applications such as the shielding and transportation of radioactive liquids.
In the home lead pipes are still used for drainage and some vent pipe applications.
