Cambridge, MA December 30, 2016 – Nuclead a leading manufacturer and distributor of custom and standard lead products for research, industry and consumers announces the delivery of several orders of lead Babbitt and lead seals to manufacturers in the USA.

Lead Babbitt

Several lead based alloys are referred to as Babbitt metal, lead Babbitt or bearing metal, and are used in the bearing surface on bearing. The name Babbitt is named for its inventor Isaac Babbitt from Taunton, Massachusetts, USA, who first formulated a tin based bearing alloy in 1839. Today a several varieties lead based Babbitt alloys exist, including:

  • Lead antimony (80% lead, 15% antimony, 5% tin)
  • Lead Tin (75% lead, 10% tin)
  • Copper-lead based Babbitt (76% copper, 24% lead)
  • Copper-lead-tin based Babbitt composed of (67% copper, 28% tin, 5% lead)

Originally used as a cast in place bulk bearing material, it is now more commonly used as a thin surface layer in a complex, multi metal structure.
Nuclead can make any custom babbitt. Supply us with your specifications and we’ll fabricate and certify to your special needs.

Here are some of Nuclead’s orders for Babbitt

Lead Seals

Lead Seals are used plastic and other metal seals are not appropriate. These applications include cryogenics, low strength flanges, optical components and vacuum. Lead seals are useful in conditions such as high temperatures and pressures, cryogenic conditions, chemical resistance, prevention of outgassing, radiation, gas permeability and hard vacuum duty.

Lead (Pb) has similar properties to Indium, although it is slightly harder with slightly higher temperature capabilities.

Nuclead has standard and special grades of lead washers, lead seals, lead shims and lead spacers available.

Here are some of Nuclead’s orders for Lead Seals

  • CNC machine per customer supplied blueprints…hundreds of pure lead seals. Sold to a bearing and seal OEM for a special item that they purchase from Nuclead on a regular basis. These items are hand delivered due to their extremely fussy tolerances and thin finished conditions; to our customer in New England.
  • Fabricate and ship lead seals per customer blue prints. These high tolerance seals are made with 4% antimony lead bar stock, fabricated by Nuclead’s extrusion process. The seals are then CNC turned per print and other secondary processes. They are sold to a US government authorized distributor of aerospace items.
  • Fabricate and ship 3% antimony lead alloy seal product. Nuclead to CNC machine several individual seal items per customer blueprints. Sold to a major government fastener & hardware supplier in California. These items are extremely tight tolerance and sophisticated seals, that meet tolerances within + / – .0005? or better
  • Fabricate and ship .010? pure lead foil: sold 2,000 lbs. to a pump OEM using the lead foil as a seal or gasket material
