Several of these orders include custom fabrication and secondary smelting to high tolerances

Cambridge, MA December 21, 2017 – Nuclead a leading manufacturer and distributor of custom and standard lead products for research, industry and consumers announces the delivery of several recent orders for Lead Seals, Antimony Lead and Lead Alloys

Lead Seals

As lead is both malleable and corrosion and radiation resistant, Lead seals are often use to in extreme environments where leakage prevention is critical. Nuclead has the experience and expertise to custom manufacture Lead seals to high tolerance and specification

Here are some recent shipments:

  • Fabricate and ship per customer blueprints: Pure lead seals. Sold to a bearing OEM in the Northeast. These lead seals are used for oil free foil gas high speed bearings &Turbo-expanders; for various Aerospace and commercial applications.
  • Fabricate and ship lead sample coupons for testing. This customer required a certain alloy of materials for US Army test and confirmation for lead seals of jet aircraft engines. The seals must collapse at the correct tensile strength to be accepted.
  • CNC machine per customer blue print specifications and tolerances. Custom lead Seals for a customer in the Energetic and Pyrotechnic industry.

Antimony lead

As noted above Lead is quite malleable, this property is useful in certain applications such as lead seals, however for other applications Lead is often too soft. As a result, Lead is often combined with other metals to create alloys with different properties.

Antimony is one of the metals that is added to Lead, usually in the range of 1-12%, with 6% being a standard in plate and casting applications. Antimony will stiffen the Lead to allow machining to take place, and to strengthen the part. Antimony will allow for better flow during casting.

Here are some recent examples of Antimony Lead shipments:

  • Saw and ship antimony lead per AMS-7721 Antimony Lead plate: 0.080? x 4.00? x 48.25?; sold to a defense contractor in Indiana for testing then resale to the contractor.
  • Secondary smelt lead block with 3% antimony lead. Sold several thousand pounds to a machine shop in the mid-west; for its own value-added CNC machining to their customers specifications.
  • Fabricate tooling and cast 2% antimony lead pigs for radiation protection for nuclear waste storage. Sold to a reseller who inventories and sells these items from stock; to any company needs lead shield radiation casks.
  • Fabricate custom lead molds and provide lead smelting of 3% Antimony Lead. Sold to a machine shop in Tennessee for their own value-added services.

Lead Alloys

There many different alloys of lead, because lead is very soft and ductile, it is often melted with other metals to create lead alloys with specific required properties, commonly with Antimony, Tin, Arsenic, Bismuth, Copper, and Zinc.

Several lead based alloys are referred to as Babbitt metal, lead Babbitt or bearing metal, and are used in the bearing surface on bearing.

Nuclead manufactures standard & Custom Lead Alloys of Lead, Copper, Antimony, Tin & Zinc, Bismuth, Kirksite, Aluminum and Lead Pours.

Here are some of our recent Lead Alloy shipments:

  • Fabricate and ship Nuclead Brand, “Puritan” Babbitt: ASTM B-23 #2 (Genuine): (89% tin / 7.5% antimony / 0.35% lead / 3.5% copper); Sold to an equipment repair firm in Texas for current work orders.
  • Fabricate and ship per customer specifications- Bi/Pb Alloy, 1# – 2# ingots: 55.5%Bi / 44.5%Pb. sold to a defense contractor in California
  • Fabricate and ship Lead foil: .010? (+ / – .0005”) x 12.00? x 50#. Alloy: Commercially pure lead Per ASTM-B29 = or greater to 99.95% Pb. Conforms to ASTM B 29 and shall be comprised of very soft lead foil that is 99.95% pure at a minimum (reference: lead raw material UNS L51121 per ASTM B29); package with End Caps required to prevent damage. Sold to a Lockheed Martin authorized supplier. These items will be cut into various widths and used for fabricating Lockheed Martin items per their blueprints.
  • Fabricate and ship Lead foil: .005? (+ / – .0020”) x 1.00? x 5# rolls; Alloy: Commercially pure lead Per ASTM-B29. These items are shipped to an industrial pump manufacturer in OK. These industrial pumps are used in dirty environments and separate sludge and liquid.
