Properties of lead – why use lead sheetrock and lead soundproofing

Lead Sheetrock

Lead sheets of varying thickness are an effective radiation shield and radiation absorber. Dependent on the intensity of the radiation, the sheet lead often needs to be several centimeters in thickness to provide sufficient heavy nuclei to absorb the radiation. However, Lead is also soft and is not a useful construction material in of itself.

Therefore, Lead sheetrock is also known as lead drywall or lead gypsum, is typically used in the construction of radiation or X-ray rooms such as those in medical offices.

Drywall panels are pressure laminated to continuous lead sheets using permanent adhesive. The resulting panels are secured to the studs using drywall screws with lead screw shields (lead disks) attached and lead seam filler tape across the seams to prevent radiation leakage.

Lead Soundproofing

Lead sheet is an excellent sound and noise reduction material. It is often used to reduce noise in office or studio environments. Also, in medical, auto and military applications.

Examples include the soundproofing of recording studios and the soundproofing of offices in proximity to airports such as one of the examples below.

Additionally, Lead Soundproofing is used to reduce noise generation from equipment typically in military applications
