Lead wire has multiple uses from ballast to mining to military

Cambridge, MA May 31, 2017 – Nuclead a leading manufacturer and distributor of custom and standard lead products for research, industry and consumers announces the delivery of several recent orders for lead wire. The orders have been shipped over recent weeks to customers in the USA and Canada.

Lead wire available in pure or alloyed lead wire rolls and meeting ASTM B29 03 or QQ-L-177e are supplied in lengths ranging from 8 feet to 500 feet (Or longer if required). Lead wire is typically supplied in diameters ranging from 0.0625” to 1.50”, with various cross-sectional profiles.

Applications for lead wire

Lead wire is used in numerous applications some examples are shown below:

  • For the repair of lead pipes, lead wire is added to joints or melted to repair equipment, such as lead valves, floors, and tank linings
  • Lead wire spooled onto 50# spools can be used as ship ballast
  • Certain medical applications use lead wire for radiation protection and for pediatric restrains for new born babies
  • Lead wire is used sporting applications, such as rowing or race cars for ballast and balance applications

Here are recent shipments of lead wire to Nuclead customers

  • Extrude pure lead wire: 5/8″ diameter on 25# spools. Shipped to a Dry-dock in Washington State, for ship repair.
  • Fabricate and ship several sizes of pure lead wire on 50# spools. Ship to a machine shop in Maryland for its own value-added services.
  • Fabricate and ship two metric tons of 5/16″ diameter pure lead wire. Nuclead extrudes the lead bar stock, then fabricates the materials to various lengths per customer written blue print specifications. The lead wire is then sealed into weather proof & shrink-wrapped containers to be used in the medical industry. This OEM uses lead for its heavy & soft properties for this particular application. Being in the medical field the lead must be contained to avoid technicians handling the lead.
  • Extrude and ship Lead wire: 11/16″ dia. x 50 lb. spool. Sold to Brown University for balance weights of their sculling team.
  • Extruded and ship Lead wire: 3/16″ dia. x 50 lbs. spools. Sold to a mining and drilling company in Canada.
  • Fabricate and ship Lead wire: 1/2″ Diameter x 25-50 lb. spools. Sold to US Army Training Support Center for an unknown program.
