Lead bricks to be used for applications ranging from radiation experiments to radiation protection to lead ballast and golf club manufacture!

Cambridge, MA August 15, 2014 – Nuclead a leader in the manufacture and distribution of custom and standard lead products for all applications, announces the recent delivery of several orders for lead bricks to customers in the United States, including the US military, U S government organizations and public utilities. The deliveries were fabricated from Nuclead stock and customized per customer specifications.

Lead bricks can be made in numerous sizes and shapes, including interlocking bricks that are preferred for lead shielding applications, since they provide better radiation protection. Standard lead bricks, which weigh about 26lbs, are the same size as clay bricks (8”x4”x2”)
Recent Deliveries of Lead Bricks

Here are some of our more notable recent deliveries of lead bricks.

  • Nuclead fabricated and shipped special radiation lead bricks which were manufactured with pure lead. These were sold to United States Military Academy in West Point, NY for Physics and Nuclear experiments that are part of West Point’s Nuclear Engineering Program that seeks to develop graduates that can provide appropriate nuclear and radiological engineering expertise to the Army.
  • We fabricated and shipped a large lead radiation brick order to the Nebraska Public Power District, Cooper Nuclear Station. Cooper Nuclear Station is a hot water nuclear reactor, located near Brownville, Nebraska on the Missouri River. It is the largest single-unit electrical generator in Nebraska.
  • Nuclead has also completed and shipped an order for radiation bricks for Brown University in Rhode Island. Brown University has several programs in radiation physics and radiation medicine.
  • Nuclead also received a custom order from the National Ocean Service, part of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), for one special cast lead brick to provide ballast for a research water buoy for tide and current research. Because of its high density and resistance against corrosion, lead is often used for ballast applications, often in the form of lead bricks but also as lead shot, lead sheet and lead castings.
  • We also sold lead bricks to a company that fabricates golf clubs, located in Gardena, CA. In this case the lead bricks provide a convenient shipping method as they will be melted down at the customer’s facility and used to add balance weights into their products.

Interlocking Lead Bricks

For high radiation shielding applications Nuclead offers interlocking lead bricks that are “tongue and grooved” on four edges. Interlocking lead bricks are commonly found in nuclear reactors, radioactive medicine storage, and radioactive lab material storage. The tongue and groove design provides greater protection from gamma and nuclear radiation by eliminating gaps and maximizing the radiation shield integrity. Lead bricks can be used for lead walls, coves, glove-boxes and hot cells or partitions.

Interlocking Lead Bricks are manufactured to extremely accurate tolerances, with very low porosity, and very smooth surfaces. The smooth surfaces of the Lead Bricks allow for easier removal of radioactive dust from the lead shield.

For Radiation shielding applications the interlocking lead bricks and often manufactured using a 4 percent antimony lead alloy to provide a harder lead brick that is less susceptible to damage.

Nuclead can offer any shape or size of lead bricks per customer specifications or to standard dimensions and tolerances. Nuclead has lead bricks in stock for quick delivery in all sizes and weight up to 40,000 lbs. (up to 100,000 lbs. for special pours) and in any material from 99.99% pure lead to any percentage of alloy, including antimony, tin, zinc, bismuth and copper. Virgin material is also available.
