Lead washers are used for a variety of reasons for example
- lead washers are being used for machinery rebuilding. In some older engines lead washers were placed under the head bolt nuts. The main reason for using the lead spacer washers here is a lubrication cushion between the nuts and cylinder head so that an accurate torque can be instead of a combination of torque and drag, without this there is a tendency for the nut to catch on the cylinder head, which gives a false reading for the applied torque. The lead actually squeezes around the bolts and also forms a seal.
- In some cases, lead washers are used because they will fail! This can protect expensive equipment from damage.
- Lead is used to seal pipes and other components in the Oil industry, in Aviation and in plumbing as sealer in sewage pipes
Lead Washer Shipments
- Fabricate and ship special pure lead washers to tolerances under +/- .010″. These special washers are over 3/8″ thick and need to be CNC machined for its tight tolerances. Nuclead has provided this type of order many times to a machine shop in New Jersey for the part of a larger government sub-contractor order.
- CNC machine 1/2″ thick x 2.25″ dia., lead washers per customer specifications & tolerances. Sold to a military supply chain store in Maryland.
- Fabricate and ship per customer supplied blue prints, special 3% Antimonial lead spacers and washers. Sold to a machine shop in West Virginia for part of a larger value-added assembly.
- Fabricate and ship: #6 Lead Washers: 0.156″ id x 0.375″ OD x 1/16 thick: Sold to a firm contracted in a Power plant shut done and uses the items for radiation shielding of containment boxes.
- Fabricate and ship Lead Washers 0.125″ thick x 2.00″ dia. OD x 1.64″ dia. ID; Sold to a Power Company in the South East for unknown purposes.
- CNC fabricate hundreds of lead shear washer seals for a defense contractor. This buyer requires lead for its soft properties to shear quickly instead of damaging multi-million-dollar equipment components if the event of an error or in a failure mode. Shear pins and items have been used for decades in all sorts of equipment from snowblowers to CNC servo motors to protect expensive ball screws. Lead is a perfect material for many applications that require slight sensitivity for fast action.
- CNC Machined and shipped special lead spacer washers to a distributor in Bloomfield, CT.
Lead Seals Shipments
- Fabricate and ship lead sample coupons for testing. This customer required a certain alloy of materials for US Army test and confirmation for lead seals of jet aircraft engines. The seals must collapse at the correct tensile strength to be accepted.
- CNC machine per customer supplied blueprints…hundreds of pure lead seals. Sold to a bearing and seal OEM for a special item that they purchase from Nuclead on a regular basis. These items are hand delivered due to their extremely tight tolerances and thin finished conditions; to our customer in New England.
- CNC machine per customer blue print specifications and tolerances. Custom lead Seals for a customer in the Energetic and Pyrotechnic industry.
- Pick and ship from in stock inventory: Pure lead wool per federal specification QQ-C-40. Sold to a municipality in Wisconsin. They will be using the lead wool to seal underground sewage pipes.
- Pick and ship from in stock inventory: Lead Wool per QQ-C-40: Sold to a general contractor with licenses for plumbing in Florida. This contractor uses the lead wool instead of the standard caulking lead to seal waist pipes. This is not recommended as the cost is substantially higher, but they prefer to do it this method.
- Fabricate and ship per customer blueprints: Pure lead seals. Sold to a bearing OEM in the Northeast. These lead seals are used for oil free foil gas high speed bearings &Turbo-expanders; for various Aerospace and commercial applications.
- CNC Machine an order of 5/64” thick pure lead oil seals. Sold to an Oil Tools company in the mid-west to be used as oil seals of a large order they are shipping this month. The equipment is used in the oil and drilling industry.
