Babbitt Metal
The original eponymous Babbitt was formulated in 1839, by Isaac Babbitt in Taunton Massachusetts. While his original formula has been lost, his name has been given to numerous formulations, many of which include alloys of lead and are referred to as Lead Babbitt.
Babbitt metal is soft and easily damaged so it seems at first to be an unlikely material for bearings, however the detail structure of the metal consists of hard crystals embedded in softer material, when this material wears it creates lubricant paths within the bearing between the hard crystals that provide the actual bearing surface.

- Fabricate Babbitt, #4 Hardware Babbitt: 1-2% Tin/ 12-14% Antimony/ Balance Pb. Sold to repeat customer; a bearing OEM in the Mid-West, for it fabrication process.
- Fabricate Nuclead Brand Babbitt, #4 Hardware Babbitt: 1-2% Tin/ 12-14% Antimony/ Balance Pb; Notch Bar. Delivered to a machine manufacturer in Canada for its manufacturing processes.
- Fabricate and ship a second recent order of Babbitt, #4 Hardware Babbitt: 1-2% Tin/ 12-14% Antimony/ Balance Pb. Sold to a bearing manufacturer in Arkansas for their assembly process for production bearings.
- Fabricate Nuclead’s’ own Puritan Brand, Babbitt, #4 Hardware Babbitt: 1-2% Tin/ 12-14% Antimony/ Balance Pb. Sold to a bearing OEM in Illinois. The Babbitt is used for large custom bearings that they manufacture and distribute worldwide.
- Fabricate and ship Lead round 6% antimony: 2.00″ dia. Babbitt faces. These items are sold to specialty tooling OEM’s that specialize in oil rig tooling. Oil rig tooling needs to meet certain requirements as not to create sparks and other specifications.
- Fabricate and ship Babbitt, #4 Hardware Babbitt: 1-2% Tin/ 12-14% Antimony/ Balance Pb. Sold to a bearing manufacturer in Arkansas for their assembly process for production bearings.
- Pick and ship two tons of Pure lead Pig ingots, approx. 60#-70# ingots (approx. size: 3.00″ x 4.00″ x 18.00″, loaf shape). Sold to a models and tools company in Michigan that will use the Nuclead lead products for lead babbitt during their assemble of lead components.
- Produce Babbitt, #4 Hardware Babbitt: 1-2% Tin/ 12-14% Antimony/ Balance Pb. Sold to a bearing OEM in Arkansas for its own manufacturing processes.
- Fabricate and ship ASTM #8 White Babbitt: 5% tin, 15% antimony, balance lead. Sold to a machine shop in New England that is using the babbitt for shaft assemblies.
- Cast lead and antimony babbitt with brass inserts. Nuclead was required to fabricate lead molds per customer drawings and pour babbitt into a cavity with brass springs. The finished machined Babbitt will be used for our customer which are Spring making specialists in producing springs and four slide stampings.
