Lead is an excellent sound and noise reduction material, due to its high density and malleability. For example, approximately half an inch of lead will produce a level of sound reduction equivalent to more than a foot of solid concrete! An absorbing material such as lead sheet absorbs sound by spontaneously converting part of the sound energy to a very small amount of heat in the lead.
It is the malleability of lead, in particular that reduces sound radiation and prevents it from being set into vibration. Lead sheets can be attached to other materials such as sheetrock to produce structurally sound walls.
In addition, sheet lead, it can also be used as an effective sound barrier, to dampen the ringing of metal structures such as steel decking or panels.
